The Ohm Spa Provides A Blissful Oasis In Bustling Midtown

September 17th, 2013

There is a wonderful place, tucked away in an inconspicuous building near the Flatiron, where you can go inside and for the time you are there, you will forget the stresses of your New York life. You will be transported away in a state of bliss and deep relaxation to a moment so delicious that even though you thrive on the hustle and bustle of the city, you won’t want to leave. This place is Ohm Spa.

Your experience here begins the moment you walk in the door and breathe in the delicious scents that inhabit this tranquil space. After a warm greeting and changing into a soft robe, you are taken to a relaxation lounge where delicious edible treats, like fresh cookies and sweet grapes, await you. There’s no ringing of phones and the rumble of the city outside becomes a distant memory.

Having indicated beforehand on a chart which parts of my body needed special attention (pretty much all of me – I’d just moved house two days earlier), my massage therapist Nicole briefly discussed with me how much pressure I preferred her to use and then I settled down into a lavender-scented heaven. I am fortunate enough to have had many types of bodywork whilst living in Southern California but in contrast, my friend who came with me to the spa had never had a massage so I was interested to see what she thought of the experience.

Nicole took excellent care of me and I use the word ‘care’ quite deliberately. Instinctively, she knew when to increase the pressure of her touch and I was appreciative of how much attention she paid to the rotation in my joints, especially in my hips, shoulders and hands. But what really surprised me was that she even massaged my tummy and the top of my chest, something that is very beneficial, especially for digestion and breathing. She finished blissing me out by working on my face and my scalp, other areas of the body that are often neglected.

I floated out of the treatment room afterwards to find my friend glowing in the relaxation room. She was thrilled with the treatment her massage therapist Ebony had given her and couldn’t believe how relaxed she felt, even with the intimate nature of the bodywork. For me, the treatment had been transformative; I had almost not come to the spa because I was so stressed from my move and now I couldn’t believe that I’d even thought about missing this amazing experience. My shoulders had moved down away from my ears, my jaw was no longer clenched and I felt ready to tackle the challenges of my life again.

We were reluctant to leave this wonderful space, knowing that once outside the doors and back on Fifth Avenue, we would be back in the pulsating beat of NYC. Ohm Spa is an oasis in the midst of the city craziness, a place that reminds you to stop sometimes, recharge and then get back into the beat. You’re better for it, for letting someone care for you, whether it’s with a massage or a wonderful facial and such treatments should not be considered luxuries; if you live a fast-paced urban life, they are necessities that help you cope and function better. I’d forgotten that I needed to give myself some TLC from time-to-time and restore the balance in my life. Ohm Spa is now my new sanctuary.
