Divine Intervention at Ohm Spa & Lounge

If I were asked to write the shortest review possible about my visit to Ohm Spa & Lounge in the Flatiron District, here’s what I would say (and did say to my friends): “Best facial EVER, at Ohm Spa!” A native New Yorker, I have been lucky enough to be able to treat myself to facials at some of Manhattan’s most highly rated spas, and hands down, Ohm Spa’s facial now tops my list.

After looking at the enticing menu of facial treatments on Ohm’s website, I decided that the Divine Intervention facial was just what I needed. It is designed to enhance tissue firmness, reduce fine lines and wrinkles, and stimulate collagen and elastin production, among other benefits. When I arrived at the spa, I completed a brief questionnaire in the spa’s reception area. I changed into a robe, sandals and a wrap (to wear like a strapless dress) in the dressing room, where a small banner hanging on the wall quoted the Buddha: “Your body is precious. It is our vehicle for awakening. Treat it with care.” This message is reflected in every detail of the spa, which expanded last February and now occupies the entire fifth floor, with eight treatment rooms: two for facials and six for massage or scrub therapies.

Plan to arrive extra early for your treatment, because you will definitely want time to enjoy the spacious lounge area, which is dimly lit with candles and offers a Zen-like experience, including a virtual fish tank. With plenty of plush, comfy couches and footrests, it will immediately transport you to a place of serenity. Snacks are abundant and tasty; you can treat yourself to green or herbal teas, fruit-infused water, cookies, pretzels, dark chocolate, mini pastries and fresh fruit.

Laurie, my facialist, loves skin care and her enthusiasm showed. The facial she provided was truly divine and included three high-end product lines: Antipodes, Shea Terra Organics and Sanitas. After I inhaled a customized aromatherapy blend, she precleansed my skin with rosemary argan oil (antibacterial), then used a lactic cleanser with a Clarisonic brush, followed by an Actifirm enzymatic peel derived from mushroom extract to provide gentle exfoliation. Next, she steamed my skin before extracting from blackhead-prone areas. Once my skin was thoroughly clean, Laurie used Sanitas professional peptide serum to boost collagen and elastin. To hydrate and revitalize my complexion, she applied Manuka honey, an antioxidant from New Zealand. Finally, more peptide serum, topical vitamin C and rose hip moisturizer wrapped up my treatment.

I wasn’t prepared to leave Ohm without spending a little more time in the lounge, where I spoke with Kathy Yan, who owns the spa with her husband, Jon Ho. Ohm is a labor of love for Kathy, who said they created Ohm to be an oasis where people can escape and unwind from the stress of city life. Kathy is a licensed physical therapist, and her massage therapists — and their clients — benefit from her years of experience. She explained to me that she wants clients to linger at Ohm and feel as if it were their second home. By offering pampering treatments in a cozy, tranquil setting, Ohm is just that and much, much more. To paraphrase Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz, “There’s no place like Ohm.”
